Svalbard

Svalbard - magical archipelago situated somewhere between Scandinavia and the North Pole, is one of the last wilderness areas in the Europe. Three fourths of the island are covered with ice and not many plants flower even in the warmest period of the year. There is approximately one polar bear per each inhabitant of Svalbard. Furthermore, low temperatures and seasonal changes of polar day and night do not make this place a destination of dreams for vacation. Among the Svalbard islands, Spitsbergen the largest one with area of 39.000 km. This land of peaks is just a bit smaller than Slovakia or Switzerland. In the north of the fjord-lined island, dominant mountain range called Atomfjella with the highest peak of the Svalbard – Newtontoppen (1717 m a.s.l.) is situated.
